How Gakuran Names Work: First Name vs Last Name

Gakuran splits your name into two very different systems. Your first name is entirely your choice — you type it in at character creation and you can change it again at any time. Your last name is the opposite: the game assigns it at random from a surname pool tied to your rolled ethnicity, and the only way to get a different one is to reroll your character. There is no last-name picker and no way to keep your build while swapping just the surname.

First names still have rules. Your name can't break the Roblox Terms of Service or contain slurs and offensive content — if it does, the game rejects it with a "Server Rejected Data" error. That same error can also appear when the name itself is fine but Roblox has tagged (filtered) it, so if a harmless-looking name keeps failing, try a different spelling or a different name entirely rather than resubmitting the same one.

Gakuran Last Names: All 4,428 Surnames by Ethnicity

There are 4,428 rollable last names in Gakuran, split across the six ethnicity pools: European 838, Latino/Latina 795, Middle Eastern 769, Indian 755, African 712, Japanese 559. When you roll a character, the game picks your surname at random from the pool matching your rolled ethnicity, so the ethnicity roll decides which set of surnames you can even land.

Ethnicity odds are heavily skewed: the official rate is 95% Japanese, with each of the other five ethnicities at 1%. That means the vast majority of players draw from the 559-surname Japanese pool, and a non-Japanese surname is genuinely rare — if you rolled one, you hit a 1-in-100 ethnicity roll. The developers don't publish the name lists themselves, only the counts, so no site can show you the actual pools.

Nameplates: Japanese Display and Year Colors

The nameplate over your character's head always renders your last name in Japanese — known surnames are written in kanji, and everything else is transliterated into katakana. That's why a European or African surname still shows up in Japanese characters above your head.

The colored outline on the nameplate marks your school year: first year blue, second year purple, third year yellow. The color is purely cosmetic and has no gameplay effect. Your year — along with your age and birthday — is assigned automatically when you join and is the one set of attributes you can never change, not even by rerolling.

Gakuran First Name Ideas (Editorial Suggestions)

Looking for a first name that matches the game's Japanese high-school setting? The lists below are our editorial suggestions — common Japanese given names in romaji — not an in-game list. Gakuran doesn't provide first name options at all (you type your own), and last names are always system-assigned by ethnicity, so these are only meant as inspiration for the one name you actually control.

Male-leaning ideas: Haruto, Ren, Yuto, Sota, Riku, Kaito, Takumi, Hayato, Daiki, Sho, Itsuki, Kenji.

Female-leaning ideas: Sakura, Yuki, Aoi, Hana, Rin, Mei, Akari, Himari, Yui, Koharu, Miyu, Kaede.

All of these are plain-language names that pass the Roblox filter in our experience, but filtering can change — if one triggers "Server Rejected Data", just pick another from the list. Pairing a short romaji first name with whatever kanji surname you rolled tends to read most naturally on the nameplate.

Gakuran Names FAQ

Can you choose your name in Gakuran?

Partially. You choose your first name freely at character creation and can change it anytime. Your last name is assigned at random from your rolled ethnicity's surname pool and can't be picked or edited — rerolling your character is the only way to get a different one.

How do you change your last name in Gakuran?

The only way is to reroll your character, which redraws your last name at random from your new ethnicity's pool. There are 4,428 rollable surnames in total, and since the ethnicity roll is 95% Japanese, you'll usually draw from the 559-name Japanese pool.

Why does my name say "Server Rejected Data" in Gakuran?

It means the game refused your first name — either it breaks the Roblox Terms of Service or contains a slur or offensive content, or Roblox has tagged the name itself. If a harmless name keeps failing, it's likely tagged: try a different spelling or a different name.

What do the nameplate colors mean in Gakuran?

The nameplate outline color shows your school year: first year blue, second year purple, third year yellow. It's purely cosmetic with no gameplay effect. Your year, age, and birthday are auto-assigned when you join and are the only attributes you can never change.

How many last names are there in Gakuran?

4,428 rollable last names in total, split by ethnicity: European 838, Latino/Latina 795, Middle Eastern 769, Indian 755, African 712, Japanese 559. The developers publish only these counts, not the name lists themselves.

Why is my Gakuran name in Japanese characters?

The nameplate always renders your last name in Japanese: known surnames appear in kanji, and all other surnames are transliterated into katakana. Your typed first name is separate — only the surname gets the Japanese treatment.
